Shirdi Sai Baba Centre Offers Free Meals
The Shirdi Sai Baba Society’s centre at Jalan Sultan Iskandar provides free meals to about 150 devotees and visitors daily. On Saturdays the number is usually doubled. The centre is the performing of annadhanam or offering.
The centre’s co-ordinator S. Ramesh said they provide breakfast, lunch or dinner to anyone who walks in.
Lunch and dinner consists of rice, two vegetables and dhal curry, and breakfast is pongal, a form of sweet rice; devotees also bring home-made cookies. Food is served after poosai or prayer. The centre employs full-time cooks to prepare the food.
The scheme was started by S.P. Kannan, Chairman of the Society, about 6 months ago. This is a self-supporting scheme and the devotees and well-wishers donate all the items required. Individuals also sponsor meals, known as ubayam to celebrate wedding anniversaries, birthdays and other auspicious days. A notice board is placed in the hall to indicate the items urgently required.
