Our Lady of Lourdes Church Celebrates Pongol
A large crowd of parishioners and friends gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Silibin to celebrate Pongol festival organised by the cultural group of the church recently. The president of the group, Mrs. Annakkili Rasiah, said that the church has been celebrating pongol from the early seventies and during the past few years it has been done on a grand scale.
The function started with lighting of the kuthu vilakku, lamp, followed by making the pongol. The festivities included cultural shows by children of the parishioners. There was a display of silambam, a form of martial art using bamboo staff. There were song and dance performances consisting of bharatham, a form of classical dance, kolattam, a dance using sticks and kummi, a dance clapping hands to a rhythm. The aim is to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Tamils.
Mr. K. Balasubramaniam, former headmaster of St Michael Institution gave a talk on the significance of pongol. Trophies were presented to the performers of the cultural show.
