Mayor Roshidi has confirmed that the planned upgrade for the Gunung Rapat Market had been put on hold and the allocation of RM6 million has been returned to the federal government.

The upgrade plan of the market was done twice with the first plan being rejected by the traders. The second plan announced in March was acceptable but the traders had refused to be relocated for the duration the market was being upgraded citing loss of business.

City Council had made 2 proposals to the traders. One was to relocate them to trade at a temporary site while the existing market was being upgraded and the second proposal was to build a market at a new site and traders would be relocated there when completed.

According to Roshidi “refurbishing the existing market was not an option”. A new and upgraded market is necessary as it needs accommodate all legal and illegal traders currently, as well as solve the problem of parking and traffic flow. Roshidi added that he was sad about this turn of affairs as funding was difficult to come by.

The next market due for upgrading is at Tanjung Rambutan and Roshidi hopes that the traders there would show their support for the council’s plan.
