A workshop which was to be organised by the city council’s buildings department before the end of the year to determine how best to handle the preservation of buildings of heritage and historical value and how to deal with dilapidated buildings in Ipoh, has been rescheduled to January.

This was confirmed by Mayor Dato Roshidi after the recent MBI full board meeting. Roshidi had stated in August that the workshop was to be held before the end of the year.

Roshidi said that he had recently received instruction from Menteri Besar Dato Seri Zambry to “give serious concern to old buildings and its landscape” to which he stated that he and his team would be “going all out” to resolve the issue.

In recent weeks, heritage society members have been enquiring from Ipoh Echo the outcome of the workshop.

Desertbug: I agree with you. Heritage is not just about buildings. The focus on buildings is probably that buildings are the most identifiable.

Also, there shouldn’t be any age requirement for heritage. Is something that is recent but has historical significance be any less of heritage value than another that is 100+ years old?

Heritage is something that gives definition to who and what we were. Rivers, canals, fountains, bridges, parks, etc all contribute to our rich past. What we do to these landmarks shows how and what the society will become in the future.

  2. Desertbug says:

Hey you so called heritage society – does heritage only mean buildings to you? Heritage also includes the local environment and that includes rivers and trees ! Why shamelessly proclaim with such hypocracy on heritage when Ipoh loses it’s character under the idiotic excuse of a so called ” city hall”. Please do not take the name of heritage in vain , you are making a mockery of it.

Regarding the now demolished row of pre-war shophouses in Jalan Chung On Siew, MBI’s town planning dept listed it for preservation in the Draft Plan for IPOH 2020 but the buildings department approved its demolition. Can someone in MBI explain what happened?

Who enforces MBI’s guidelines on renovations of pre-war buildings? Does MBI accept the state’s intention of applying for listing on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

  4. S.Sundralingam says:

Heritage and dilapidated buildings and the streets of IPOH present a more ‘democratic’ way to relate Ipoh’s past lives, they stand as a physical evidence for HISTORY of Malaya. A city without old buildings is like a man without a memory. Notify about the workshop to all heritage lovers and concerned non-government organizations like Perak Heritage Society.
