Preparing Students for SPM
The staging of the play, Gelangang Tuk Wali at the Department of Arts and Culture Perak hall recently, was a success. It achieved its aim of assisting students who were preparing for their upcoming Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
According to producer, Mohd Yusop Najmi Otham, the production is based on the literary works of Ismail Kassan found in the literature anthology textbook of Form Four students. The literature is included in the SPM examination, as one of the titles to be studied by students under the Form Four Malay Language Syllabus. “The play is not aimed at entertaining the audience only, but to help students understand the story better so they can answer questions in the examination,” he said.
Chairman of the Kinta District Cultural Society had this to say, “It’s a great show and succeeded in entertaining the audience. I am certain it would be of help in their SPM examination.”
Executive Councillor for Tourism and Culture, Dato’ Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi and Mariam Sulaiman, Director of the Perak Department of Arts and Culture were present at the play. It tells the struggles of Tuk Wali, a silat exponent in defending his country against foreign intruders.
Mohd Yusop Najmi told Ipoh Echo that reception from secondary school students was better than expected. He felt that the encouraging response from the public was an indication of developments taking place in the Malay theatre scene in Perak.
RM
