“I’ll keep on reading.” That was the answer given by government retiree, S. Anandan, 72, when asked about him being voted as the individual who borrowed the most number of books (adult category) in “Let’s Tour De Library @ Tun Razak Library Programme” on Saturday, March 12.
Anandan did not expect to be picked as winner of the award, as he considered his book- borrowing routine as part and parcel of his hobby. Nonetheless, he was proud of the achievement and vowed to continue with his hobby till the end of his days. For the record, the septuagenarian borrows an average of five books a month. His choice ranges from fiction, novel, military and politics, though not in that order.
“The award comes as a pleasant surprise to me. I’ve been a member of this library for 35 years,” he told reporters.
The award was presented by Senior Executive of the Karangkraf Media Group, Muhammad Asyraf Yahya. In attendance was Mohd Zakuan Zakaria, Secretary of Ipoh City Council.
Anandan recommended that the reading habit be instilled in youths today. Malaysians in general are not into reading, per se.
The Assistant Director of Community Development, Tun Razak Library, M. Kasturi said that the programme was aimed at revitalising the library through organised activities that would benefit Ipohites.
“We’ll organise a book sale in conjunction with Ipoh City Day on Monday, May 23,” she added.
