Having suffered a crushing 6-1 defeat to Australia, things did not get any rosy for Malaysia as they went down 0-1 to Great Britain in their third match at the 26th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Tuesday, May 2.
Despite showing great enthusiasm, luck somehow eluded the home team.
Alan Forsyth broke the fans’ hearts when he scored a goal for Great Britain via a penalty stroke at the 26th minute and was named the “Man of the Match”.
Stephen Van Huizen, the Malaysian team coach, complimented his boys saying they were good and that they fought hard.
“I think the boys played very well and worked hard to get the equaliser. Unfortunately, the umpire yellow-carded Meor Muhamad Azuan Hasan for an infringement five minutes before the final whistle.
“Now we need to re-energise in order to play a crucial game against New Zealand tomorrow,” said Stephen to reporters.
The whole stadium felt the heat in the third quarter when a goal for Great Britain was disallowed.
In spite a goal down, the home crowd did not stop cheering. Stadium Azlan Shah was filled to the brim and among the vociferous supporters was Perak Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Results of earlier matches: Australia trounced India 3-1 while New Zealand defeated Japan 3-2.
Fixtures for Wednesday, May 3: Japan vs India at 4.05pm, Great Britain vs Australia at 6.05pm and New Zealand vs Malaysia at 8.35pm.
