The Rotaract Club of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), through its Children Provision Charity (Child-Pro) programme, organised a charity event recently. The event, held at the university campus, involved five Ipoh-based children’s homes namely, Pertubuhan Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Setia, Pusat Harian Kanak-Kanak Spastik Ipoh, Pusat Jagaan Anak-Anak Yatim & Miskin Nurul Iman, Precious Gift Home and Vision Home.
Incepted in 2010, the programme is aimed at giving assistance, aid and care to needy children via monetary support such as education sponsorship and providing for their daily basic needs. “It also provides an opportunity for youngsters who are ready to serve to help out those children,” said club president, Fong Jing Yan.
The club plans to raise RM10,000 worth of funds this year to spread love to children in homes, in line with its theme, ‘Redeeming Love’.
According to project director, Lai Yong Lin, average expenses for the five children’s homes is approximately RM13,000 per month. Besides financial support, the homes also lack basic needs such as food and drinks supply, medical items, school uniforms, etc.
Thus, a number of fund-raising activities will be held at the UTP campus. This includes Child-Pro Charity Run (September 23), Child-Pro Fair (September 26-27) and Child- Pro Charity Concert Night (September 29).
Visits to the children’s homes were made in June and July to familiarise volunteers to the current situation. The visits had enabled volunteers to tailor the drive to meet the specific needs of the homes.
