Down Memory Lane – Traders Encroaching on Main Roads
Thumbs Down
By A. Jeyaraj
Traders who are required to sell their goods along Horley Street on Sunday mornings are occupying the left lanes and five-foot paths along Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Dato Onn Jaafar. These are busy roads and traders are causing massive traffic jams and creating an unsafe situation. Vehicles are parked indiscriminately along these roads.
I remember during the late forties a handful of traders were selling their stuff at the back lane of the former Lam Looking Bazaar, now known as Sew Cheong Building, every morning. Over the years this business has grown, now named ‘Down Memory Lane’ and is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Most of the people who come here are locals and only a few foreigners can be seen.
In cities of neighbouring countries that I have visited, the week end market is promoted as a tourist destination and is listed in the tourist itinerary. I wonder why Tourism Perak is not promoting this market which is unique. The market must be relocated to a bigger place and stalls better organised. This market must be included in the tourist destination of Ipoh to attract tourists.
Meanwhile for the time being action must be taken against errant traders.
