An unexpected article about Ipoh in The New York Times has placed this city on the international stage. A spotlight now shines on Ipoh, making it one of the centres of attention for tourism in Malaysia.
In conjunction with this piece of good news, a brainstorming session was held on Tuesday, March 6 at WEIL Hotel on ways to enhance the city’s tourism potential.
Executive Councillor for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Multimedia and Communications Dato’ Nolee Ashilin Mohammed, and Ipoh Mayor Dato’ Zamri Man attended the event. Participants involved were from both non-governmental organisations and government agencies in the tourism industry in Ipoh.
“Now that Ipoh is being recognised internationally, we need to promote the city more actively. I hope that the Tourism Ministry will give us their cooperation as well,” Nolee said in her speech.
As part of the efforts to attract more tourists to Ipoh, the Malindo Air Ipoh-Medan flight route was reactivated beginning Friday, March 16.
With the cooperation of MB Incorporated, a time-capsule programme was launched on Thursday, March 8 in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of the last surviving tin dredge in the country. The time capsule will remain buried for 20 years until the 100th anniversary of the tin dredge.
The ceremony was held at Tin Dredge Number 5 (TT5) at Km 9, Jalan Tanjung Tualang where the tin dredge is located. Dato’ Nolee and Dato’ Aminudin Hashim, CEO of MB Inc. graced the event.
“If the tin dredge could talk, I’m sure it has plenty to tell us. The time capsule will contain the stories of our people. It can be a story for yourself or other people in the future,” said Aminudin in his officiating speech.
He also said that there are future plans to develop the TT5 area including the construction of warehouses, a court for traditional games and wayang pacak.
Members of the public can write and submit their stories to be buried in the time capsule. This capsule set can be purchased for RM38 per unit at the TT5 gallery or at Anjung @ TT5.
