Letter: Farewell “Ipoh-mali UK Envoy”

It is sad to note that “Ipoh-mali UK Envoy” will be leaving Malaysia after serving as the British High Commissioner for five years. She is no other than Vicki Treadell. Well-known woman of substance, her bond with this country will get stronger as she was in Malaysia for a long time.

As for me, I had met her in person in Ipoh on several occasions. An Ipoh Mali, every year, when our Warrior’s Association Malaysia held the Remembrance Day at Ipoh Cenotaph (in front of the Railway Station/Town Hall), she will be present at this ceremony. Her humility has always impressed and every one of us is proud of her and it will be a sad day for all of us as she is returning to the United Kingdom after completion of her service in this country. Let us all pray for her good health and hope that she will visit Malaysia in the coming years.

All this was possible because it was initiated by our founder member and President of the Warrior’s Association Malaysia, Dato’ R. Thambipillay, ex-OCPD of Batu Gajah, Perak. The current President, Mr Ravinder Kumar Sharma and his committee will be organising the Remembrance Day event on June 14 in Ipoh.

On another note, it is news that our Royal Customs Department Director General, Datuk Seri T. Subramaniam retired on March 9. He is popularly known as Mr GST (Goods + Services Tax). He served with distinction for 35 years in the government department. Although I don’t know him personally, it is noted that his contribution and sacrifices to this department is well appreciated by all. As a retired government servant myself, it is good to follow in the footsteps of this Customs Director General, so that more and more revenue can be collected for the government. Let us all pray for his good health and happy retirement.
