Association for Residential Aged Care Operators of Malaysia (Agecope) Perak Branch organised an enlightening session on advancement in wound management at MU Hotel on Saturday, August 24. Sponsored by Alpha Bio Medic, it was held in collaboration with C & S Associates, an aged care consultancy.
The speaker of the day was Simon Lam, a Malaysian qualified as a registered nurse and psychiatric nurse in the UK. Currently based in Melbourne, he has extensive experience in aged care management as Director of Nursing. In the mid-1980s, Simon was one of many proponents of the wound care movement. He presented a paper at the first wound care roadshow in London in light of moist wound healing concept and a new generation of wound care products.
One laudable achievement of his is the commissioning of two nursing homes and passing all accreditation standards at the first attempt (the first Australian facility to do so in 1992), the first of which was commended by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.
According to him, the future of wound care involves smart bandages.
“Smart bandages monitor the moisture, oxygen, ammonia and temperature levels of wounds without needing to remove the bandage. It also actively monitors the condition of chronic wounds and deliver appropriate drug treatments to improve the chances of healing,” Simon explained.
Present were Cecilia Chan Woen Min, Vice President of Agecope (national) and Dr Yek Sing Chee, Chairperson of Agecope Perak Branch cum general practitioner.
“We will organise more workshops on care for the elderly,” Dr Yek told Ipoh Echo.
Established in September last year as a national association, Agecope is an NGO comprising experienced, professional practitioners working in the aged care health industry. It has long been identified that there is a distinct lack of cohesive collaborative approach to address the shortfalls of the industry thus leading to sub-standard provisions of care generally. Agecope will have a platform to architect changes for the better, working closely together with the related ministries and agencies. It is also a support forum for all residential aged care operators in Malaysia to network and share positive experiences.
Participation as a member will add to the strength of Agecope to make informed decisions, propose ideas and influence policies as a coordinated representation to the government. Registration fee is a one-off RM25 and an annual membership fee of RM50.
