Four automated awareness safety system (AWAS) cameras will be installed near the Meru-Menora Tunnel in the effort to minimise accident rates.
The camera installations at both sides of the expressway will be done by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and PLUS Expressways Berhad (PLUS).
According to the Director General of JPJ, Dato’ Seri Shaharuddin Khalid, installation works will commence by the end of the year.
“We’re well-informed of the Meru-Menora Tunnel being a hotspot for fatal accidents,” he told reporters in an official visit at the former Jelapang toll plaza recently.
“Technical aspects and specifications are now at the final phase in determining the best location to install the cameras,” Shaharuddin said.
“The camera installations are based on the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS),” he mentioned. “The speed limit set at the vicinity of Meru-Menora Tunnel will be 70 kilometres per hour.”
Shaharuddin stated that there are currently 18 AWAS cameras installed in the whole North-South Expressway, bringing the total to 22 with the installation.
“The cameras have prominently shown a decreased rate of accidents,” he expressed. “They indirectly serve as an observer to expressway users, which instil a high discipline level in them.”
