Coway (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s leading water, air and home wellness specialist, has obtained confirmation from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) that the recent viral post on the risk of water purifiers overheating was not issued or endorsed by them. All relevant parties are currently conducting an investigation on the background and authenticity of the accompanying video whereby fumes appear to emanate from a water purifier.
This came in response to posts on social media platforms; the video is purportedly based on an official statement issued by Bomba regarding water purifiers overheating when the electricity is on while there is no water supply.
“To date, neither Coway nor Bomba has received complaints or reports regarding fumes emanating from water purifiers due to overheating, nationwide. The authenticity of the video is yet to be verified. Hence, we would like to assure all our valued customers that all Coway water purifiers sold and distributed in Malaysia have been tested and certified safe for consumer use, in accordance with industry standards set by accreditation organisations such as the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) and SIRIM,” said Kyle Choi, Managing Director of Coway Malaysia.
He explained that Coway’s water purifiers have an in-built “Automatic Heater Shut-Off” safety feature which turns off the heating function automatically to prevent any overheating.
As a precaution during any water supply disruption, consumers are however advised to turn off their water purifier’s power source to save electricity, and to switch it on again when the water supply resumes. Other tips in maintaining household electrical appliances in safe, working order include using dedicated plug points instead of extensions, and not placing electrical appliances close to any open flame, heat or direct sunlight.
As The Life Care Company, Coway Malaysia reiterated on the safety and quality performance of all its water purifiers. The Company remains on course with its mission to promote a healthy environment and endeavour to make people happy, healthy and most importantly – safe.
