Birth of Baby Elephant Brought Cheers to ZTNS on New Year

The start of year 2022 saw the birth of a new family member at the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari (ZTNS) called ‘Kelian Junior’.

The female baby elephant estimated to weigh between 70 to 80kg was birthed by an elephant named ‘Kelian’ on January 1.

According to the Yang DiPertua of the Taiping Municipal Council, Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir, ZTNS now has a total of 11 elephants (Gajah Malaysia) including the newborn calf.

“Every newborn calf will live with its mother for about 6 till 7 years while the period of weaning is around 3 to 4 years old.

“This is the eighth successful birth at the zoo.

He added that the birth has made ZTNS one of the zoos which successfully bred the Gajah Malaysia.

He explained that surveillance was conducted throughout the elephant’s gestation period and to date, the carers are still monitoring the safety of both mother and calf.

The zoo also welcomed several births throughout 2021 which were a Rusa Ubi (deer), a Rusa Bawean (Bawean hog deer), two Burung Tiong Mas (mynah birds), a Landak Raya (porcupine) and two Burung Botak Upeh (milky storks).
