Upcoming Exhibition ‘Pera + Flora + Fauna’ to Showcase Local Art on Global Stage

The state government via People Of Remarkable Talents (PORT) will be spotlighting Perak’s diverse cultural and historical heritage among others via an art exhibition titled “Pera + Flora + Fauna” in Venice in April.

It is set to be part of the official collateral event at the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale in Venice.

According to a recent post on the Facebook page of the State Secretariat Office, the exhibition which will be held from April 23 till November 27 engages with the discourse around how indigenousness and nature are affected by mainstream cultural attitudes of industrialised nations, the very nations contributing to existing environmental problems.

Thus, the upcoming exhibition aims to address these questions while drawing on different perspectives of man, nature and their interrelation.

“The state of Perak is dense with its diverse flora, fauna, historical and cultural assets. Their essences are explored and aesthetically presented through this fascinating exhibition. The fact that this project is accepted by the main curator of the biennale has made us very proud,” stated Dato’ Nolee Ashilin binti Dato’ Mohammed Radzi, the Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government and Tourism, who is also one of PORT’s board of directors.

It is also highlighted that ‘Pera + Flora + Fauna’ will feature artists from both Malaysia and Italy who will showcase works across multiple disciplines such as performance, film, sound, sculpture and new media.

The line-up of exhibitors includes Azizan Paiman (Malaysia), Kamal Sabran (Malaysia), Kapallorek Artspace (Malaysia), Kim Ng (Malaysia), Projek Rabak (Malaysia), Saiful Razman (Malaysia) and Stefano Cagol (Italy).

To take place at Archivi della Misericordia, Venice, the exhibition is commissioned by the General Manager of PORT, Nur Hanim Mohamed Khairuddin and curated by appointed lead curators, Amir Zainorin and Khaled Ramadan as well as associate curators, Camilla Boemio and Annie Jael Kwan.

“It is our hope that ‘Pera + Flora + Fauna’ will become a gentle reminder for both artists and the audience to ponder and contemplate the importance of sustaining a sense of respect among living things,” Nur Hanim expressed.

Established in 2011, PORT’s mission is to bring accessibility in the arts to the public by initiating local and international art and cultural programmes.

A cultural agency that is fully funded by the state government, PORT is also focused on providing opportunities for Perakean youths to develop their talents in the visual arts, performing arts, literature, film and other creative fields.
