Musician Highlight: Play it again, Sam Lopez
By Anne Das
Ipoh born and bred, St. Michael alumni, Samuel Lopez started his musical journey at the age of 10, with his mother teaching him his first few chords. Since then, he has learned to play the piano, the bass guitar and the drums. Sam wrote his first song when he was only 13, which ended up being a catalyst for his exploration into song writing and production.
‘Lost Spaces’ is an indie synth-pop project started by Sam Lopez. Having moved from Ipoh to KL to make music, he faced many challenges there, especially making connections with people and marketing himself. “‘Lost Spaces is a sanctuary that emerged from a combination of feeling lost in the big city and a need to calm the noise in my head, whilst maintaining a safe space for expressing music” explains Sam.
2019 was his biggest year yet where ‘Lost Spaces’ was featured in Urbanscapes (Malaysia’s longest-running creative arts festival) with the likes of Boy Pablo, Glass Animals and The Drums & The Marias. In addition to this, he opened for Korean indie rock band HYUKOH혁오 at KL Live and Phum Viphurit at The Bee (Publika) and played at the Good Vibes Festival alongside the likes of Daniel Caesar, Mura Masa, 6LACK and Dean.
He has 350,000 Spotify monthly listeners and an even bigger following based around the SEA region, mainly Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia and Singapore with pockets of new listeners showing up around the United States. He is also actively playing live, having just recently finished playing at events such as EIDELWEISS in Genting, RIUH Ipoh, HEINEKEN event in KL, Guinness Event in Bukit Jalil, and most recently, Pesta Kita in KL.
What began as an individual’s journey in finding his own place in this world, is now a space Sam wants to create for everyone from all walks of life to be drawn to and lose themselves in.
Combining quirky sounds with lush synths, fuzzed guitars, and syncopated drum beats, ‘Lost Spaces’ aims to make more music for people to vibe, groove and by extension, get lost in.
