Leslie’s Wan Tan Mee at JM Corner
by Anne Das
If you are in the ‘buzzing’ vicinity of RHB Bank in Ipoh Garden South, give this Wan Tan Mee stall run by Leslie Ong and his adorable mother, a try. He whips up a stellar variation of this Cantonese dish with delicate egg noodles, piquant black sauce and a host of seasonings that tie the bowl together perfectly. This flavour-packed meal is topped with caramelised BBQ pork slices or your choice of meat, juicy steamed wontons, and crunchy Bok Choy.
Here you can find a few varieties of this local favourite – from the conventional barbecued pork (char siew) and dumplings, to the ever-popular chicken feet with mushroom. The latter variety is served with a side of wonton soup (additional RM2.50), juicy black Chinese mushrooms, veggies, and chicken feet that are braised for many, many hours.
The ‘Kai Keok meen’ or Chicken Feet noodles is a dish for those with an acquired taste. Either you love it or hate it. Fans of this delicacy will definitely appreciate the texture of the chicken feet served here – springy, flavourful with a hint of spice from the dry chillies. The earthy notes of the mushroom juices infused into the gelatinous chicken skin are delicious. Not every stall that serves this dish can make it so sumptuous in flavour with the mushrooms cooked perfectly, chewy, savoury, and juicy. For RM6, the generous portions are way too big for a small eater.
Alternatively, try the Honey BBQ Chicken Chop Noodles (RM 7.50), Dry Curry Chicken Noodle (RM 7) or the Braised Pork Ribs Noodles (RM 8). All variations come with green chilli slices, offering that spicy and sour kick to every bite.
You can find Leslie’s Wan Tan Mee stall in JM Corner Coffee Shop. There are many stalls for customers to choose from including Ipoh’s traditional Chee Cheong Fun, Pork Noodles, Uncle Lee’s Sandwiches, Nicole’s Vietnamese Food, and A popular Vegetarian stall to mention a few.
This coffee shop is always clean and the toilets are “shockingly” the same ( CLEAN!). One of the reasons Ipoh Echo decided to do this review is also to credit JM CORNER Coffee Shop owner, Teddy Song and Wife who makes sure their toilets are clean for all of us. Keep it up!
Unfortunately, this is almost a forgotten area in most Coffee shops in Ipoh these days!
