Ipoh Girl, Michelle Yeoh Makes Historic Oscar Win.
Ipoh can once again be proud of its daughter, Michelle Yeoh, as she makes a historic win at the Oscars for best actress in a leading role for her role in “Everything, Everywhere All At Once”.
Not only is this historical for Ipoh and Malaysia itself, but she is the first self-identified as Asian actress to have won this award in the 95-year history of the Academy Awards. This is notable as previous winners and nominees with Asian ancestry had either hidden or did not identify themselves as Asians. Vivien Leigh, famous for Gone With The Wind, was Indian on her mother’s side.
So congrats once again to Michelle Yeoh, who doesn’t just make Ipoh proud, but all Asians. Of course, we at Ipoh love her the most!
“Vivien Leigh, famous for Gone With The Wind, was Indian on her mother’s side.” The name of the actress is actually Merle Oberon, not Vivien Leigh.
Merle Oberon did indeed have mixed heritage. As did Vivien Leigh. In any case, Michelle’s the first winner to identify herself as Asian.
