Soulful Desserts at August Healing Café, Ipoh
by Anne Das
If you’re looking for a hidden gem in Ipoh, look no further than August Healing Café. Tucked away on the 1st Floor, this cosy café is a must-visit for cake lovers and coffee fanatics alike. Here’s everything you need to know.
Despite only opening in February 2021, August Healing Café has quickly gained a loyal following of cake enthusiasts. Operating every day except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, they are a Muslim-friendly café that specializes in a variety of delectable cakes, such as Victoria cake, Rose lychee, Strawberry shortcake, Bubur cha cha crepe cake, Ondeh ondeh, and their bestseller, The Tiramisu, just to name a few.
Their selection of cakes and pastries varies on a daily basis, so be sure to check their Instagram Stories to see what’s trending before heading over. Also available are a variety of savoury bites like croissants, bagels, sandwiches, quiche, cinnamon rolls, muffins, scones, and madeleines.
This café radiates a warm and vintage charm with its yellow walls, light oak furniture, and chic décor. The ample space between tables makes it very spacious and the natural sunlight from the large windows creates a cosy and inviting ambiance. It is a good place to unwind and have your sweet cravings satisfied!
Owners Cecelia Ng and Li Xuan, both aged 25 years, are the brains behind this quaint little café. Both have been baking since they were young. Influenced by her mother to bake, Cecelia worked in a central kitchen in Sentosa, Singapore (pastry division) for many years before coming back to Ipoh to open her very own cake shop. These two have a passion that is evident in the desserts they create here.
The service is efficient and friendly. Although there may only be a few staff members on duty, food and drinks are served relatively quick. The café’s attention to detail is seen in the quality of the food and the way it’s presented. Even their barista creates beautiful art with every cup of coffee ordered, making for a truly Instagram-worthy experience.
In terms of food and beverage, there’s plenty to choose from. Non-caffeinated beverages mainly consist of tea of different flavours, and they also sell imported ‘Bundaberg’ bottled sodas. However, their coffee is a standout, with the iced latte being a must-try for coffee enthusiasts. They use good quality beans, and the secret ingredient they add to the Vanilla latte makes it a unique and unforgettable experience.
Their prices are reasonable, with drinks ranging from RM6 to RM10 and their cakes can cost RM15 to RM20 a slice. Despite this, the cakes are made with the best ingredients, making them worth the price.
The only downside to visiting August Healing Café is the lack of parking, which is expected given its proximity to tourist hotspots in the old town area.
This First Floor café is a surprisingly cosy, inviting space that’s perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying some alone time with a divine slice of cake and a cup of creamy ice latte. The friendly staff and unique ambiance make it a must-visit for anyone looking for soulful dessert experience in Ipoh. So next time you’re in the area, be sure to stop and indulge.
