The Bougainvillea City Dementia Cafe (BCDC) held their latest monthly gathering at 1 Lasam yesterday. The BCDC are a support group for people living with dementia and their caretakers. It is a grassroots group by and for those dealing with dementia.
The group would normally invite specialists to their sessions for sharing and raising awareness of dementia, as early diagnosis of dementia is vital to ensure longterm quality of life. However, this session was special.
Attended by well over 20 participants, this month’s session was a golden oldies sing-along with the musician, Kenny, whereby the participants had a grand old time singing and even dancing to such evergreen songs like Oh! Carol, Jambalaya and Que Sera Sera, and even a rendition of the Chinese Wo Ai Ni and Malay Rasa Sayang.
It was an invigorating event that allowed the participants to have some fun, quality time while also jogging their motor and memory skills.
The upcoming session in May will feature a “Positive approach to Care” by Teepa Snow, which is an interactive presentation by Calvin Chan, who is a native of Ipoh and a Teepa Snow certified trainer.
Meanwhile, the June session is set to receive a visit by Parti Komedi Rakyat (PKR), who will be doing their stand-up. The public are reminded that while it is a rare opportunity to see PKR in action, those who wish to attend should be those living with dementia, their caretakers and dementia-related people. This is so as not to overwhelm those who are suffering from dementia.
