Moonriver Lodge, situated in the Sigar Highlands just 1hour and 15mins away from Ipoh City, is a haven of natural beauty and tranquillity. This family-owned farmstay offers guests a respite from the daily grind, enveloping them in a serene and peaceful atmosphere that soothes the soul.
As soon as you arrive, you are greeted by a lush green garden with beautiful flowers, sunbirds, and butterflies flitting about, and the distant chorus of frogs calling out for rain.
According to Billie Tan, the manager of Moonriver Lodge, “Our vision is for sustainable living and the conservation of the rainforest for future generations. We aim to repopulate the jungle with native trees and create a space where children can roam free and learn about the natural world around them.” This vision is reflected in their commitment to sustainable living and conservation of the rainforest for future generations.
Moonriver Lodge offers comfortable accommodation, but what sets this lodge apart is its focus on nature-based experiences and education. Designed and hand-built with love, the lodge was initially established as an earthly home for the Khoo family and workers. The extensive and beautiful garden around Moonriver Lodge is a result of various experiments using permaculture and natural farming methods over the fourteen years.
The lodge offers an immersive experience that extends beyond mere accommodation, affording guests the opportunity not only for introspection and reflection but also a sanctuary in which to reconnect with the self and the natural environment. The lodge actively encourages spiritual and religious retreats, yoga, and meditation groups, as well as art and environmental groups to visit and immerse themselves in the area’s natural beauty.
One interesting offering of Moonriver Lodge is their new Art-In-Nature program, which was recently conducted by homegrown Ipoh artist Kareem during this Hari Raya holidays. This program aims to bring education in an outdoor classroom setting, where participants can learn about the natural world and express their creativity through art. Billie says, “We believe that art and nature go hand in hand, and we hope that through this program, we can inspire more people to appreciate the beauty of nature and especially strive to protect it.”
Some of the activities you can do here include guided walks through the stunning mossy garden, which is perfect for nature walks and photography. Participants can seek out the elusive Rafflesia Kerrii, the second-largest flower in the world, and for the more adventurous, there are high mossy forest treks featuring over 200 species of ferns and moss. The lodge also has a few rabbits, chickens, jungle fowls, dogs, and cats, and grows its own food in the kitchen gardens and garden beds, keeping chickens for eggs and implementing permaculture garden designs, such as herb spirals and keyhole gardens.
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, learn about sustainable living, or simply relax and unwind, Moonriver Lodge offers a one-of-a-kind experience that you won’t forget. According to Kareem, “Art-In-Nature at Moonriver Lodge is not just about creating art, but also about experiencing nature in a more meaningful way. It’s about slowing down, tuning in, and finding inspiration in the natural world around us.”
