GOPENG: A Nepalese man, who was feared to have drowned in a quarry near a major supermarket here last night, was discovered dead by rescue teams today.
According to a spokesperson from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, they received a call regarding the incident at 7:37 PM yesterday.
The victim, identified as Seroj Senoli, 26, was believed to have swum towards the centre of the quarry and subsequently drowned.
“Personnel from the Gopeng Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by the Water Rescue Unit from the Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar Fire and Rescue Stations, rushed to the scene.
“According to statements from the victim’s friend, the victim swam approximately 50 feet from the edge to the centre of the quarry and is presumed to have drowned due to exhaustion.
“The search and rescue (SAR) operation continued today with the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Department’s divers.
“The victim was located at 9:45 AM by the diving team at a distance of 50 feet from the suspected location,” he told reporters on Saturday.
The spokesperson added that the victim was brought up to the edge and then handed over to the police for further action.
