Join the Cause at Sekolah Semangat Maju's Charity Food Fair!

by Anne Das

Perak Association for Intellectually Disabled (PAFID), a voluntary and non-profit organisation, is dedicated to providing education, vocational training, and rehabilitation for intellectually disabled individuals in Perak. At the heart of their efforts is Sekolah Semangat Maju, a remarkable school in Kg.Tawas, Ipoh, that caters to these exceptional children.

Led by enthusiastic Organising Chairperson, Ms Wong Soo Yee together with her enterprising committee, PAFID is thrilled to announce the long-awaited return of their Fund-Raising Charity Food and Fun Fair. After a hiatus of three years, the school is determined to create a memorable event on July 16th, from 8.30 am to 1 pm, right within the school’s compound.

Imagine a bustling fairground with more than 40 vibrant stalls, offering an array of activities, products, and produce. From fresh vegetables and fruits to captivating handicrafts, enticing merchandise, lucky draws, game booths and even a clown, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. The primary goal is to raise RM150,000 in support of Sekolah Semangat Maju.

According to Ms Annie Margaret Lourdes, The Principal and Project Manager with PAFID, the current enrolment of 100-day students and 32 residents in the school’s hostel, Sekolah Semangat Maju provides essential care and training for intellectually disabled children aged 5 to 22, empowering them to lead independent lives. The success stories speak volumes, as over 220 former students have found employment in factories and private companies, thanks to the dedicated efforts of PAFID.

Despite collecting nominal fees from students, generous donations from individuals, private sectors, and government subsidies, the school still faces the challenge of covering increasing operating expenses. The lack of fundraising over the past three years has placed a heavy financial burden on PAFID. Now, they humbly reach out to compassionate citizens, seeking their generosity and support.

Speaking to the dedicated Chairman of the School, Mr Su Eng Hock, “The funds raised from the Charity Food and Fun Fair will ensure the continuity of Sekolah Semangat Maju’s educational programs and provide a conducive environment for these exceptional children. Moreover, they will be utilized to cover yearly expenses, including the well-being of residents, hostel maintenance, and daily operational costs”.

To achieve their ambitious goals, PAFID presents several ways for the public to contribute and make a lasting impact. Individuals can support by selling coupons among their network of friends, family, and colleagues. Exciting opportunities are also available for vendors to open booths at the event, promoting their brand/business while donating the proceeds to this worthy cause. Cash donations are equally welcome, with PAFID being a registered charity that provides tax-exempt receipts for donations above RM100.00.

The people of Perak, your support is crucial in making the Charity Food and Fun Fair a resounding success and ensuring PAFID’s continued service to the community. Together, let us create a more inclusive society, where every child can thrive and achieve their full potential.
