Pekan Food

The ‘Real’ Hidden Café’ in Old town

by Anne Das

Venturing through the enchanting streets of Old Town Ipoh, it’s easy to be captivated by the vibrant colours and nostalgic charm of Concubine Lane. However, amidst the hustle and bustle of this popular tourist area, lies a hidden restaurant that often goes unnoticed—Pekan Food Cafe. Tucked away behind the allure of ‘Wife Street’, this unassuming eatery is waiting to be discovered by those with a taste for adventure.

My colleagues and  I were intrigued by the whispers of Pekan Food’s existence, hidden in the maze of narrow alleys. The thrill of the unknown beckoned us to explore further. It was clear that this was a place that required a keen eye and a sense of adventure to uncover.

Stepping inside, we were enveloped in a cosy ambiance that welcomed us with open arms. The earth tones and rustic decor created a warm and inviting atmosphere, totally opposite from the bustling streets of Kong Heng Square to a tranquil den of a foodie’s delight. It became evident that Pekan Food Cafe had mastered the art of creating a haven of relaxation and comfort, far removed from the chaotic energy of the surrounding area.

What sets Pekan Food Ipoh apart is its ability to seamlessly blend Western and local flavours into a medley of taste sensations. The menu boasts an impressive selection of dishes that cater to a variety of palates. From Salmon & Egg  Fried Rice, to their creamy signature Salted Egg Chicken Burger and a selection of pastas, there is something to please almost every discerning palate.

They serve a daily set lunch menu where you can expect dishes such as Prawn & Egg fried rice ( RM16.9), Chicken Breast Spaghetti Aglio Olio (RM19.9) and Hawaiian Chicken Burger (17.9)  just to name a few. Otherwise, there are also snacks, main courses and pizzas on the all-day menu.

Dulang Sharing Platter : It’s a sharing plate for 2 or 4 people (RM29.9/ RM86.9)

We then discovered a treat that truly exemplified Pekan Food ‘s creativity— their Freak Shakes! These awe-inspiring milkshakes are available exclusively for dine-in patrons and offer a whimsical twist on a classic treat. One particular standout was the Cotton & Candy Shake (RM 22.9), a sight to behold. Adorned with a chunky colourful lollipop, whipped cream, and a cloud of cotton candy, it not only delighted the taste buds but also provided an irresistible photo opportunity. Other enticing options such as the Cookies and Cream Shake and the rich Chocolate Shake rounded out the menu, promising indulgence with every sip.
