TAIPING – In an unprecedented event, the town of Taiping is set to host a Muay Thai sporting competition, featuring a participation of 200 contenders.
This event isn’t limited to local athletes alone; it has also garnered interest from participants hailing from diverse regions including Thailand, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Africa.
Scheduled to take place at Aeon Mall Taiping from September 1st to 3rd, the competition aims to vie for the coveted Ahli Parlimen Taiping Trophy, presented by YB Tuan Wong Kah Woh.
During a press conference, Kah Woh stated that the primary objective is to unearth the talents of local youths.
“Initially, we projected the participation of around 120 contenders; however, the overwhelming response led to the participation of 200 athletes engaging in a total of 100 matches.
“It is hoped that this championship will have a positive impact, contributing to the elevation of the sport’s status in the state of Perak,” he affirmed.
Kah Woh emphasized that another major tournament is planned for the upcoming year in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary of Taiping Heritage Town. This initiative aims to not only attract a higher number of domestic and international tourists to the region but also bolster the prominence of the sport.
He added that collaborative efforts with various agencies will be undertaken to establish a dedicated venue in the region, considering Taiping’s significant involvement in tomoi sports within the state of Perak.
