Two Factory Workers Experience Shortness of Breath Due to Ammonia Gas Leak

SIMPANG PULAI: Two factory workers experienced shortness of breath following an ammonia gas leak incident at an ice manufacturing plant on Industrial Avenue Rapat, here today.

Assistant Director of Operations, Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, stated that the two victims, identified as Nazirah Mohamad, 33, and Muhammad Azizuddin Azni, 25, were employees of a neighbouring factory.

“Both victims are factory workers from a neighbouring plant and both experienced shortness of breath,” he said on Tuesday.

He further mentioned that both victims were subsequently taken to the hospital at 8:40 AM today and are currently in the Yellow Zone, but they are in stable condition.

Earlier, the media reported that an ammonia gas leak occurred at an ice manufacturing plant on Industrial Avenue Rapat early this morning.

Sabarodzi stated that the incident happened at 5:11 a.m. today.

He said that personnel from the Simpang Pulai Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the Pasir Putih Fire and Rescue Station, rushed to the scene.

Meanwhile, he added that the operation is currently under control, and monitoring is ongoing to ensure there are no further risks at the site.

“The Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Team conducted a size-up, installed a water curtain, and sent a diver into the hot zone to seal the leak at the tank’s valve area.

“The Hazmat team took further readings in the area and identified any remaining leaks in the tank,” he added.
