An eye screening program for school children organised by Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Makmur Negeri Perak was held at SJK T Taman Desa Pinji, Lahat, in conjunction with World Sight Day on October 12.
World Sight Day is observed every year on the 2nd Thursday of October
The main objective is to create awareness among the people on the importance of eye care.
As 80% of a child’s learning is done through the eyes, it is therefore important to protect eye health and detect any problems at an early stage.
During the event at SJK T Taman Desa Pinji, 150 pupils were screened with the support of Vision C Optical Centre, Ipoh.
Dr. P. Subasini from the Ophthalmology Department at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun Ipoh, gave a talk on eye care for pupils. She stressed that caution should be exercised when using eye drops and other medicines. Children should not use drops or medicines on their own and should seek the guidance of their parents and only use those medicines as prescribed by medical personnel. Details such as expiry date and other information should be paid attention to.
Senior Ophthalmologist Dato’ Dr. Jasvinder Singh from Hospital KPJ Ipoh also attended. He said that the program was to create awareness among students, teachers and parents. All segments of the community play an important role in the eye health of children and should strive to detect problems at a young age in order to rectify any problems during the early stages.
Also present was the school Head Mistress M. Jothi and K. Nachemutu, Chairman of the Eye Screening Project of Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Makmur.
