A little about the history behind the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the town that pioneered many firsts in Malaysia, the actual date of Taiping town’s establishment is believed to be on February 20, 1874.
According to the Secretary of the Perak Heritage Association, Nor Hisham Zulkiflee, on that date, Minister Ngah Ibrahim along with Captain Dunlop, William Pickering, Swettenham and Chinese leaders signed the boundary agreement of mining settlements between Go Quan (Hai San) and Si Quan (Ghee Hin) in Larut.
“It eventually formed Taiping and Kamunting (Report of the Commissioners under Clause XIII of Perak Engagement dated 20th January 1874).
“Moreover, Captain Speedy himself recorded that he selected the site for the new towns of Taiping and Kamunting in early March 1874 (Blue Book of Larut 1874),” he said.
