IPOH: The police successfully arrested four local men believed to be involved in cable theft in Taman Ipoh Jaya Timur here last week.
All suspects, aged 38 to 42, were arrested in an operation in the Padang Serai and Sungai Petani areas in Kedah yesterday.
The Chief of Police of Perak, Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, stated that the Ipoh District police received information from the public about a cable theft incident last Monday.
According to him, acting on that information, the police tried to apprehend a suspicious four-wheeled Toyota Hilux vehicle that had fled.
“Assistance announcements have been made, and several PDRM patrol cars have been assigned to pursue the suspect’s vehicle up to the North-South highway.
“The suspect’s vehicle was successfully located, while it is believed that four local men managed to escape,” he said in a statement here today.
Mohd Yusri stated that the investigation is conducted under Section 379 of the Penal Code (offense of theft of cables), which provides for a maximum prison sentence of seven years or a fine or both upon conviction.
“The investigation is also carried out under Section 186 of the Penal Code (offense of obstructing a public servant from performing duties), which can result in a maximum prison sentence of 2 years or a maximum fine of RM 10,000, or both,” he said.
He said, following the investigative actions, a police team from Branch D4, Criminal Investigation Division of the Ipoh District Crime Investigation Department, successfully arrested four local men in Kedah.
He mentioned that the police also seized various tools used for cable theft.
Investigation results reveal that all suspects admitted involvement in this case as well as cable theft cases in the city area of Ipoh. Initial urine screening tests found all suspects positive for Methamphetamine drug,” he said.
It is said that all suspects have been remanded from February 27 to March 1, 2024, to complete the investigation papers.
“After the completion of this case investigation, the investigation papers will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for charging recommendations,” they said.
