MANJUNG: Police have arrested an individual believed to be involved in damaging equipment at a temple in the Kampung Koh area.
Manjung District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Nordin Abdullah said that on Saturday around 1.30 pm, the Manjung District Police Headquarters (IPD) received a police report regarding a viral video recording of an individual damaging temple equipment.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code, which pertains to injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any group.
“If convicted, the offender can be punished with imprisonment for up to two years, or a fine, or both,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Additionally, Mohamed Nordin said the case is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
“If convicted, the offender can be fined not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisoned for a term not exceeding one year, or both,” he said.
Furthermore, he said, on the same day around 9.30 pm, police from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Manjung IPD successfully arrested a 35-year-old man and seized a mobile phone believed to have been used by the suspect to record the video.
“The suspect will be brought to the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court for a remand application to assist in further investigation.
“The police also advises the public not to make any statements touching on the sentiments of the 3R issues (Rulers, Religion and Race),” he said.
He added that, furthermore, the public is advised not to make any speculations that could jeopardize the investigation.
