Police investigate case of navy personnel allegedly assaulted by supporters

LUMUT: Police are investigating a case involving a naval officer who claims he was attacked by supporters during a football match at the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) Base Stadium here last Monday.

Manjung District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Nordin Abdullah, said they received a police report from a 26-year-old man who is a naval officer at about 12:53 PM on Tuesday.

“The man stated that on May 27 (Monday) at approximately 7:15 PM, while at the TLDM Base Stadium in Lumut watching a football match between the MKPL and Paskal units, he was suddenly assaulted by the supporters (Paskal) in the stadium.

They accused him of making an obscene middle finger gesture towards them,” he said in a media statement here today.

Mohamed Nordin stated that the man denied making an obscene gesture.

“The complainant (the man) sustained injuries to his face, right ribs, left neck, and head and has received treatment at the Armed Forces hospital (HAT).

“The case is classified under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

“If convicted, the penalty is a maximum two-year imprisonment, a fine, or both,” he said.

He added that an investigation is currently ongoing.

“The police also advise the public not to speculate in a manner that could affect the investigation,” he said.

He urged anyone with information to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Mohd Nazari Yaakob, at 017-5729646 to assist the police investigation.
