Perak ACG Scene Still On The Go

By KT Leong

A Cosplay Gathering Event was held at Aeon BIG Falim, in conjunction with their Orange Day event for the last weekend of June 2024. This event was organised by a group known as Team Seller Ipoh (TSI).

It was a lively event which was slated to start at 2 pm that day, but plenty of cosplayers were seen walking around earlier in the day; enjoying themselves with fellow pop culture fans and sharing photo opportunities with adults and children alike. This was amidst dozens of vendors selling various tchotchkes and other related merchandise.

This was particularly noteworthy, because ever since a Tabletop Games & Hobby Mini Roadshow brought to Ipoh by event organiser Toyeban in September 2022, Toyeban has been a frequent organiser of Anime, Cartoons & Games (ACG) events in Perak, which eventually included cosplay as well. While not the first to bring cosplay to the Ipoh scene, for example, Ipoh Parade has been hosting a Cosplay Party event on an annual basis; Toyeban provided ample opportunities for Perakian, and especially Ipohite cosplayers to enjoy their hobby throughout 2023 and 2024.

A key figure in organising these events has been “Gunny Bob”, a friend of the founder for Toyeban. Together with Gunny Bob, TSI is looking to continue making positive contributions to the local economy, which includes continuing on the ACG ball that Toyeban has gotten rolling.

Established in Ipoh in 2018, TSI is a team of sellers who actively support events in Ipoh and across the state. Their journey began at the Lokkin Flea Market and their community has always participated in various organised events, including Toyeban’s Wakunime series of ACG events.

Focusing on Ipoh, their goal is to create opportunities for local vendors through events that reflect TSI’s unique themes and the scenes they follow. They’re not looking to be in competition with other event organisers, but rather, to enhance the local pop culture scene, and support local vendors in events organised by themselves and possibly others as well.
