GERIK: An elderly woman died from suffocation from what is believed to be the result of choking on a rambutan seed at her home near Felda Lawin Utara, here.
According to the Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood, his team received information regarding the incident on Sunday night.
“Around 8:30 PM, the police were informed about the death of a 72-year-old woman at the Lawin Health Clinic.
“An initial investigation conducted at the clinic found no criminal elements on the victim’s body.
“The victim’s 46-year-old daughter reported that around 7 PM on Sunday, the victim was on the front porch of the house.
As the daughter was about to bring her inside, the victim suddenly experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately taken to the Lawin Health Clinic.
“The victim was examined and it was found that something was lodged in her throat, suspected to be a rambutan seed,” he said in a statement on Monday.
He added that the victim was given respiratory aid by medical officers but was pronounced dead.
Zulkifli stated that an autopsy was conducted and the Forensic Department of Gerik District Hospital confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia (breathing difficulties).
Following this, he said the case was classified as a sudden death, and the body was handed over to the family for funeral arrangements.
