IPOH: A well-known snack food outlet famous for selling murukku in Kampung Kacang Putih, Buntong, was raided for allegedly using an unauthorized halal logo for trading and market sales.
Perak State Director of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, said the raid was carried out by a team of KPDN enforcers on Thursday at around 12:45 p.m.
“During the inspection, a number of snack products were found to be marked with an unauthorized halal logo used for trading purposes.
“Further investigation revealed that the products were being sold both at retail and wholesale levels in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.
“As a result, legal action was taken under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011, and 463 packages of various snack foods using the unauthorized halal logo were seized.
“The total value of the seized items is estimated at RM 2,720,” he said in a statement here today.
He added that the case is being investigated under Order 8(a) of the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011, which is an offense for certifying any food as halal.
He stressed that KPDN takes a serious view of traders using unauthorized halal certifications and markings on food products or goods in violation of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.
Therefore, he urged the public and consumers to act as the eyes and ears of the authorities by providing information regarding food products suspected of using unauthorized halal logos.
