Pickleball, a sport blending elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has captured the hearts of Ipoh residents, sparking a surge in interest and participation. From its modest beginnings in July 2023 with just two groups and around 40 players, pickleball has seen remarkable growth in the city.
Today, there are at least five active groups, boasting a combined membership of approximately 150 players. “Pickleball is easy to pick up, even for those with little to no racquet game experience,” says Bryan Chai from IPOHBUG. “The social aspect, encouragement from fellow players, and the laughter that fills the courts are also major draws.”
To further promote pickleball in the community, IPOHBUG has been actively organising initiatives and events here. Collaborating with the Perak Pickleball Association, they’re reaching out to the public, introducing the game to schools, and planning carnivals and competitions. Partnerships with venues like YMCA and Perak Chinese Recreation Centre (PCRC) are also in the works to develop pickleball facilities.
“We are thrilled to introduce pickleball to our members at YMCA,” says Dato Daniel Tay, Chairman of YMCA. “It’s a sport that promotes inclusivity, fun and fitness for people of all ages and backgrounds.” Pickleball offers numerous benefits, including exercise, social interaction, a sense of belonging, and opportunities for inter-state / International play.
Currently, pickleball can be played at venues such as Elim Sports Hall, Canning Garden Methodist Church and at Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Negeri Perak with plans for expansion to accommodate the growing interest. Ipoh’s pickleball community has achieved remarkable milestones. From hosting the first pickleball carnival in March 2024 to winning medals in the Vietnam pickleball tournament in April, the players have shown their dedication and skill.
