PARIT BUNTAR: The state of Perak is set to introduce the installation of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to address waste disposal issues.

These smart cameras are capable of capturing offenses such as improper waste disposal outside designated bins, which often leads to scattered rubbish.

Such violations contribute to the unsanitary condition of open waste bins placed by local authorities.

Perak’s State Executive Councilor for Housing and Local Government, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, stated that this pilot project will be initiated by the Parit Buntar District Council.

She mentioned that local authorities have received numerous public complaints regarding improper waste disposal, including not placing trash into the provided roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) bins.

“As a result, AI-powered CCTVs will be installed in identified locations for monitoring and enforcement purposes.

“This new technology, powered by solar energy, can capture images of objects, individuals, and vehicles involved in illegal waste disposal,” she said.

She said these remarks during a visit to the hawker center at Laman Piandang and Jalan Besar Tanjung Piandang.

Also present was the President of the Kerian District Council, Helmi Yusof@Jusoh.

According to Sandrea, the primary aim of installing AI-powered CCTVs is to enhance enforcement, ensuring that the public disposes of waste correctly in the designated areas.

In addition to recording, these AI CCTVs can also notify local authorities when a bin is full.

This allows the authorities to replace the bin promptly, preventing issues like foul odors and pollution at the site.
