WEIL Hotel Transforms Food Waste into Organic Compost

By: Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

IPOH: WEIL Hotel has made history by successfully converting all of its food waste into organic compost through the ‘Be An Eco Hero’ campaign.

In partnership with Mentari Alam Eko (M) Sdn. Bhd (MAEKO), the hotel has become the first in Perak to implement this sustainability initiative.

Leveraging MAEKO’s innovative technology, the hotel can convert 100 kilograms of food waste daily into high-nutrient organic compost within 24 hours.

WEIL Hotel’s Managing Director, Liew Yu-Wei, stated that this achievement not only demonstrates the hotel’s commitment to sustainability but also inspires other hotels to follow suit.

“We are proud to be the first hotel in Perak to introduce this innovative Food Waste Composting Machine to address food waste issues.

“This initiative also raises awareness and sets a new standard in hospitality sustainability,” he told Ipohecho/Peraktastic, following the WEIL Hotel’s Sustainability Practices and the ‘Be An Eco Hero’ Campaign event yesterday.

Also present was MAEKO’s Project Specialist, Fairuzzatulaini Alias.

Liew further mentioned that the hotel has successfully diverted over 36,500 kilograms of food waste from landfills each year, thereby contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“The organic compost, known as ‘Be An Eco Hero’ – Organic High-Nutrient Soil Enhancer, is available at Tiffin Restaurant (WEIL Hotel) for RM5.00 per 500g pack.

“This compost is entirely produced from the hotel’s food waste, making it an ideal choice for those who wish to support sustainable gardening practices,” he added.

“In addition to this, we have implemented various other initiatives, including eliminating single-use plastics, using eco-friendly toiletries, and installing water filtration systems in every room to reduce plastic bottle usage.

“We are not only contributing to environmental conservation but also ensuring that our guests enjoy a more sustainable stay experience,” Liew concluded.
