IPOH: Slope erosion has been identified as the cause of cracks and potholes on Jalan Kamaruddin Isa near the culvert upgrade works by the Ipoh City Council (MBI).
This is due to the erosion of slopes near the pipe culvert structure, which was completed earlier in August through the jacking method.
In a statement, MBI said that through checks by the Department of Infra Engineering, the slope erosion occurred as a result of excavation carried out by the contractor.
The works are intended for the construction of an inlet structure at the culvert’s entrance.
“Slope reinforcement work began yesterday afternoon using sandbag and crack-filling methods.
“The potholes on the road surface were also filled with crushed rock material as an immediate measure on site to prevent a more serious collapse.
“The department also expects the construction of the inlet structure to be completed within a week,” the statement said.
There is also the installation of U drains that need to be connected from the existing inlet to the culvert face.
The statement further clarified that the culvert upgrade works are expected to be fully completed by mid-September.
In light of this, the department urges road users to comply with safety signage in the area for future convenience.
Previously, the public, especially road users, expressed concerns about the cracked road conditions, particularly with the frequent rainy weather.
A trader in the area, Ahmadi Hassan, is worried about the safety of using the road, which is perceived as unsafe.
Additionally, he mentioned that the incident of a bridge collapse in Slim Village near Tanjung Malim during heavy rain has heightened concerns.
“Last January, flash floods hit the Taman Fair Park area, stranding 36 people.
“The floods also overflowed into business premises, with cars submerged up to the door level.
“This time, we are worried about the possibility of other disasters,” he said.
