In a world where screen time often means the same as playtime, Ipoh’s pioneering Nature School offers a refreshing return to nature for our little ones. Launched by Joanne Lum in 2018, this Nature School represents a unique integration of the great outdoors into early childhood education. Here’s why this approach is gaining traction and why you might want to consider it for your child.

The concept of outdoor schooling isn’t entirely new, but it’s gaining renewed attention. Although formalised outdoor education began in the mid-20th century with Denmark’s forkest school movement, humans have learned in nature for centuries.

Today’s nature-based education—spanning from nature camps to forest schools—addresses modern challenges like obesity, attention deficit disorders, and hyperactivity. As research backs the benefits of nature play, more families are embracing this holistic approach that balances academic learning with social and emotional development.

Nature School Ipoh embodies this philosophy perfectly. After navigating pandemic-related challenges, the school has relocated to the expansive former Tenby Ipoh site. This newly refreshed location is now designed with a focus on enhancing its nature-based programs and providing a vibrant learning environment.

“We have created a beautiful space where children can feel comfortable, express themselves, and be inspired by everything they explore here,” says Joanne Lum, founder of the school. This sentiment is reflected in their curriculum, which prioritises hands-on, experiential learning over traditional textbook instruction.

Guided by leaders, young explorers dive into hands-on experiences, building confidence and making friends too.

Catering to children aged 3 to 6 years old, Nature School Ipoh offers both half-day and full-day programs. Their curriculum immerses children in nature through activities in their spacious garden and natural surroundings. “Mother Nature is the greatest teacher,” Joanne explains. “By interacting with their environment, children learn valuable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience, all while having fun.”

A parent of one of the students shares their experience: “My child loves being outdoors, but modern lifestyles often don’t allow for it. At this school, she’s thriving—her natural curiosity is nurtured through daily outdoor lessons, and she enjoys the freedom to learn at her own pace.”

Children engage in activities like gardening, nature walks, and creative play, which help them build a deeper connection to the natural world and understand its significance. The new location enhances these experiences with more space and diverse activities, creating a richer learning environment.

Nature School Ipoh is designed to be a safe and stimulating environment where children can freely express themselves and satisfy their natural curiosity. With spacious outdoor areas and thoughtfully arranged indoor spaces, children are free to explore, discover, and engage in meaningful activities that nurture their growth.

For young children, focused play ignites creativity and makes everyday magical.

Parents looking for a unique educational setting for your young ones will find Nature School Ipoh to be a welcoming and flexible option. With both half-day and full-day programs available, it supports a range of needs and schedules.
