By Zaki Salleh

IPOH: Biovisma Sdn. Bhd., also known as Green Energy Asia (GEA), and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on sustainable biofuel research and production.

The partnership aims to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to convert used cooking oil into biodiesel and other valuable products.

GEA is a company that collects and purchases used cooking oil, licensed and certified by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC).

In a statement, GEA noted that this collaboration marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future by leveraging UTP’s research expertise and GEA’s industry experience.

“The Biofuel and Biochemistry Research Centre (CBBR) at UTP will play a crucial role, assisting the local fisheries sector by producing biodiesel for community boats.

“Additionally, the partnership plans to involve the local community in initiatives such as collecting used cooking oil from cafeterias around UTP.

“This will contribute to the university’s low-carbon campus goals,” the statement added.

The MoU was signed by Mervyn Cheng, CEO & Founder of Biovisma (GEA), and UTP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ir Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib.

The MoU signing was witnessed by Perak State Exco for Science, Environment, and Green Technology, Teh Kok Lim.

This collaboration not only aims to create biofuel but also to transform waste into wealth, building an economy that benefits both the environment and the community.

In the same statement, GEA announced it has signed an MoU with the Kampar District Council (MDKpr) as a strategic partner for an ethical and environmentally friendly used cooking oil disposal program.

This initiative is a crucial step in ensuring the responsible and sustainable management of used cooking oil.

This is GEA’s second strategic partnership with local authorities in Perak, following the collaboration with Ipoh City Council.

Those interested in joining GEA’s projects or wishing to dispose of used cooking oil can contact GEA’s hotline at 012-391 4113 (Malay), 016-576 9313 (Malay/English), or 014-902 1343 (English/Mandarin).
