Free Blood and Dementia Screening at YMCA this coming weekend

By KT Leong

YMCA Ipoh, alongside Angsana Health and in partnership with ACT4Health, Universiti Malaya and O2 Klinik Medical, will be celebrating World Alzheimer’s Day this coming weekend, by holding a Healthy Minds, Happy Lives event, which will take place at YMCA Ipoh at 211, Jalan Raja Musa Aziz, 30300 Ipoh, Perak, from 9 am to 5 pm on 21 September and from 9 am to 1 pm on 22 September.

During this event, there will be FREE Dementia Screening available for all individuals aged 60 and above, as well as Brain Exercise Demonstrations, which are simple exercises that can help prevent dementia.

In addition, there will also be blood screening for those in the B40 group.

There will be an opening ceremony on the first day, with Dr. Harnek Singh Badeshae (Geriatric Medicine) from KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital giving a speech, followed by a panel talk involving healthcare experts and caregivers of people living with dementia.

Dr Esther G. Ebenezer from Dementia Society Perak will give the opening speech on the second day.

For the Dementia Screening, there will be a series of tests to identify the person’s risk of currently suffering from dementia. Those who have a higher risk will be advised to go for more conclusive testing, which would not only deny or confirm their condition, but also help identify the kind of dementia they may be suffering from.

The Brain Exercises will involve a number of activities, from maths to spelling and other memory games, that will keep the cogs in your brain running at peak performance.

YMCA wants to connect with the public and help the community. As early detection of dementia and other related conditions, can significantly improve the patient’s happiness, on top of their quality of life moving forward.

Through this, YMCA and Angsana Health hope to raise awareness, reduce stigma and provide valuable knowledge and support to those impacted by dementia.

So don’t miss out on this weekend’s event. Even younger people can benefit from learning about the challenges faced by caregivers.
