MANJUNG: A 64-year-old government retiree lost RM5,000 after being deceived by an individual impersonating a police officer.
According to Manjung District Police Chief, ACP Mohamed Nordin Abdullah, the Manjung District Police Headquarters received a report regarding the phone scam last Monday.
He stated that the victim received a phone call from the suspect, who claimed to offer assistance in resolving an investigation related to a drug case.
“The individual impersonating a police officer offered to resolve the investigation to free a person detained by the police in connection with the drug case at the Manjung District Police Headquarters.
“The victim suffered a loss of RM5,000,” he said yesterday.
Additionally, he noted that from January to September this year, the total losses from phone scams in the Manjung district amounted to RM782,766.11, with a total of 39 cases reported.
“One of the methods used in phone scams involves the suspect calling the victim while posing as an enforcement officer.
“Besides impersonating police, they may also pretend to be from the tax department (LHDN), anti-corruption agency (SPRM), courts, financial institutions, or courier services,” he added.
Mohamed Nordin also reminded the public that all dealings with government agencies should only be conducted in offices and not via phone calls, except for appointment purposes.
