The Perak Turf Club (PTC) hosted the vibrant Kawan ESG-Coronation Cup 2024 last Sunday, transforming a hot day into a thrilling experience for the community and racing enthusiasts. The Coronation Cup, first held in 1985, celebrates the installation of Sultan Azlan Shah and has since grown into one of Malaysia’s most anticipated horse racing events.
This classic PTC feature race is a highlight on the national racing calendar, drawing elite horses, jockeys, and trainers from around the region. Each year, the event showcases the strength of Malaysia’s horse racing industry and brings together fans and families for a day rich in tradition and excitement.
This year, the prestigious RM250,000 Kawan ESG-Coronation Cup was sponsored by Kawan Renergy Berhad, reflecting their commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance values. Kawan Renergy Berhad, an Ipoh-based company recently listed on Bursa Malaysia, is known for providing engineering solutions in equipment, process plants, and power plants, adding an impactful presence to this year’s main race.
Mega Gems, with Jockey Lim Aun Kean and Trainer Wayne Lim Woei Chet, secured a memorable victory in a hard-fought race. Mega Gems had the crowd on edge, hanging back early before making an unexpected, powerful move in the final stretch. With the guidance of his jockey, he surged past the other contenders, electrifying the crowd and sealing his triumphant win.
The day also featured two other major races: the RM22,000 Mitavite Asia Cup and the inaugural RM100,000 Singapore Pools Trophy. Singapore Pools officials from neighbouring Singapore and esteemed guests from the Japan Racing Association (HK Representative Office) attended, adding an international presence to the day’s festivities.
These key races demonstrate the commitment of sponsors and the calibre of competition, attracting enthusiastic support from the local and visiting crowd.
The social scene was buzzing, with attendees from all over, including new faces from various industries, mingling and enjoying the camaraderie that PTC events are known for. The Tan Sri Jeyaratnam Lounge hosted around 60 distinguished guests, who enjoyed a thoughtfully prepared multi-course lunch by Citrus Restaurant.
The atmosphere was lively, filled with engaging conversations that made the day not just about racing but also a celebration of community ties and fresh connections.
Beyond the races, excitement surrounded PTC’s ambitious transformation. Ipoh Echo had a sneak peek at the nearly completed Sun Yin Loong White Coffee at Perak Turf Club. Visionary creator Kai Lek Tan described the project: “We’re honoring Ipoh’s coffee culture while crafting a warm, inviting space where every material holds a story, from century-old bricks to recycled wood and local bamboo.
This café sits under the gorgeous shady trees of PTC’s lush grounds, offering a serene setting with ample free parking for visitors. The design perfectly complements the iconic atmosphere of the club, promising a new gathering spot for locals and tourists alike.
Chairman Dato’ John Lim expressed optimism about PTC’s future, highlighting strategic partnerships and the fresh energy brought by new racing talent. The Kawan ESG-Coronation Cup 2024 was a celebration of tradition, community, and the exciting road ahead for PTC as it embraces both heritage and innovation.
