TAIPING: The Taiping Old Market, built in 1884 and now around 140 years old, is set to become one of the heritage icons of Perak state.
This market is one of the oldest in Malaysia and has witnessed the development of Taiping town.
Last year, the Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) approved an additional allocation of RM11.5 million to develop the Taiping Market as a National Heritage Market.
Through this project, the market has been rebuilt while preserving its heritage features, including its structure, design, and color.
It is understood that the official reopening ceremony of the market will take place soon.
The Taiping Old Market, also known as the wet and dry market, is located in the shopping area in the middle of town.
Secretary of the Perak Heritage Association, Nor Hisham Zulkiflee, mentioned that there are two main markets, built separately and divided by the busy Jalan Kota.
He said the Oude Markt was built in 1884 and the Nieuwe Markt in 1885.
“The rapid growth of Taiping town created a need for markets to provide essential facilities for the local population.
“Initially, there was an iron fountain in front of the market, but it was replaced by a simple concrete bell tower.
“Both buildings were constructed with wooden pillars, concrete slabs, and iron roofs,” he said.
Nor Hisham added that the high roofs of the market ensured air and light flowed through without obstruction.
“This market has two distinct functions, one as a dry market and the other as a wet market.
“During that time, these markets were filled with fresh vegetables, fish, and meat to meet the needs of the local community,” he said.
