IPOH: A total of 6,619 commercial crime cases were recorded in Perak from January to July this year, with losses exceeding RM68.5 million.
During the same period, 1,407 online fraud cases were reported in Perak, involving losses of over RM55.3 million.
Among these were e-commerce fraud, telecommunications fraud, love scams, and non-existent investment scams.
Love scams, in particular, have had a significant impact on female victims, especially those aged 41 to 50.
Even more concerning, syndicates are now targeting younger individuals through fake job scams and non-existent loan schemes, using social media as a platform for manipulation.
The dangers of these scam crimes were shared with participants at the 2024 National Anti-Scam Awareness Tour for Perak at the Banquet Hall, Perak Darul Ridzuan Building.
This two-day program also included knowledge-sharing sessions, such as the presentation on “Cybersecurity Landscape in Malaysia” by Mr. Mohammad Zaharudin bin Ahmad Darus, Head of the Digital Risk Intelligence Department, CyberSecurity Malaysia.
Additionally, a session titled “Your Personal Data is Like a Goldmine: Prevent Before You Fall Victim” was presented by the Chief Assistant Director, Personal Data Protection Department.
Earlier, the program was officiated by the Chairman of the Perak Communications, Multimedia, and NGO Committee, Mohd Azlan Helmi, on behalf of the Perak Menteri Besar.
