World Children’s Day, originally known as Universal Children’s Day in 1954, is celebrated on 20th November of each year with the goals of fostering global unity, raising awareness among children everywhere, and enhancing the welfare of children.
As a provider of various rehabilitation services for children, Yayasan Ipoh (YI) also participated in the celebration of this special day at its premises. The celebration was generously sponsored by Mr. Kanu, who was celebrating his wife, Mrs. Nirmala’s birthday, the next day.
Rather than splurge on some lavish dinner, they decided to give to the community and shared the occasion with the children at YI, in order to create a joyous and memorable occasion for the children, inclusive of those who are specially gifted; and fostering a sense of community, creativity, and fun.
Fun activities such as a fashion show, singing and dancing, along with the “Soopa Doopa Pool Party” were organised. The parents also participated in preparing a potluck lunch with a variety of delectable dishes.
It wasn’t all just fun for the sake of it however, as each of these activities had their own purpose.
The Fashion Show for Fun encouraged the children to showcase their unique style and creativity through a fun fashion parade. The Dance Show provided a platform for the children to express themselves through dance while also promoting physical activity. The Singing Show celebrated the children’s musical talents while the Soopa Doopa Pool Party was a refreshing and enjoyable water activity for the children to cool down on a warm day. Even the Potluck pool side lunch, which was a picnic-style lunch at the play area, fostered social interaction and camaraderie.
Mr. Kanu and Mrs. Nirmala would return the next day, the date of her birthday, to spread more joy to the children. Who in turn, overwhelmed her with a rendition of the Happy Birthday song, which brought her to tears.
Sharing one’s special occasions by giving to the community, especially the children, is a fulfilling practice that both spreads and receives joy.
The CEO of YI, Dato Dr. Ramanathan noted that “We welcome such great gestures and suggest others to celebrate their anniversaries and birthdays with the children anytime of the year or to offer a donation so that YI can organise it on their behalf”
By celebrating this day, YI and the happy couple hope to have created a positive and lasting impact on the lives of children in the community. This event provided a valuable opportunity for the children to have fun, learn, and connect with their peers, which coincided with YI’s theme for 2024 Children’s Day, “Celebrating the Wonder of Childhood”.
