LUMUT: The threat of illegal fishing nets can impact marine resources.

Such activities damage the ecosystem and fisheries resources in the waters, and they have been found to be increasingly rampant.

To curb illegal fishing nets, the Pulau Sembilan – Project Ghostnet 2024 program, organized by the Perak State Parks Corporation, was carried out in the waters of Perak.

The initiative involved the removal of nets in the areas around Pulau Buloh and Pulau Batu Putih.

A team from the Perak State Maritime Squadron joined the program.

The Director of Perak Maritime, Maritime Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob, stated that 10 personnel were assigned along with a patrol boat.

He said that the seabed cleaning activity was carried out to remove ghost nets that pose a threat to marine life on the ocean floor.

“Malaysian Maritime divers participated along with professional divers from private agencies under the coordination of the Nature & Oceanography Advocate Society (NOAS).

“All the nets that were successfully collected were taken to the Lumut Yacht Club Jetty for disposal,” he added.
