Lumut Town Needs Transformation to Revive Tourism

By Zaki Salleh

IPOH: Stakeholders are urged to implement a transformation to revive tourism attractions in Lumut town, so it will no longer be labeled as a ‘dead town’.

Member of the State Legislative Assembly (ADUN) for Pangkor, Norhaslinda Zakaria, said that the tourism image of Lumut needs to be restored to boost the local economy.

She pointed out that the lack of existing attractions has had a domino effect, leading to fewer job opportunities in the tourism and services sector, forcing young people to seek employment elsewhere.

She proposed four key strategies to change Lumut’s tourism image.

“First is the development of integrated tourism by focusing on cultural heritage and architecture.

“Historical sites in Lumut and natural attractions could attract more visitors. Among these are the history of Lumut’s exploration by past generations, the history of the seafood industry, and the opening of the Lumut Royal Malaysian Navy Base.

“Second, promoting eco-tourism and agro-tourism. The natural beauty of Lumut should be harnessed by introducing environment-based and agricultural tourism products,” she said.

She also suggested implementing a tourism entrepreneur incubation program by providing funding and support for local entrepreneurs in the tourism sector through business incubators.

“Another suggestion is to utilize digital marketing and promotion to market Lumut town as a tourism destination.

“Today, the rise of influencers and platforms like TikTok should be used to the fullest.

“Use social media and digital campaigns to attract tourists by showcasing the uniqueness of Lumut’s culture and natural beauty.

“Lumut can shed its ‘dead town’ label and grow into a premier tourism destination,” she added.
