The Ipoh FamilySearch Center, formerly known as Family History Center, organised a Family Discovery Day on 30 November, with the theme, “Tracing our Chinese Ancestry,” at its premises at 12, Lorong Cheah Cheang Lim, 30350, Greentown, Ipoh (next to the Bali Hotel), to help attendees to discover and celebrate family heritage.
The keynote speaker, Brother Ivan Ho, shared about tracing his ancestry of over 28 generations, sharing that joining or contacting a clan would be one of the best ways to begin the search for a “jia pu” (clan/family record books). He also noted that even though previously, only male offsprings were recorded, families are now beginning to include females in their “jia pu”.
Family trees, local and foreign, were on display. Family tree charts from familysearch.org such as lineages or pedigrees, portrait pedigrees and family group records with sources were exhibited on boards. Two completed American family pedigrees that supposedly linked to Adam (4000 BC) were put on view on the walls. Memories which included photos, stories and memorabilia of the past were also shown on tables.
At the FamilySearch Center or even at familysearch.org, visitors can start building their own family trees or start writing their first post. They can search historical records by browsing places, collections, images, genealogies and catalog. FamilySearch Digital Library offers a wide range of online books and resources.
